As far back as 1998, Random Piece (then known as the Silver Tongued Devils) rocked the Toronto scene by combining the heartfelt vocals of Jay DeNicolais and the tingle-inducing solos of guitarist Marc Teghrarian. Their songwriting skills were delightfully honed on unsuspecting audiences, gaining them a strong following.
Late in 2001, with a new rhythm section consisting of bassist Steve Rogers and drummer Graydon James, the group evolved into the Random Piece we all know and love: a rock quartet serving up tasty and thoughtful sonic gems. The results have been crowd-pleasing performances full of captivating melodies, picturesque lyrics, the obligatory pop/rock hooks, and driving rhythms.
Random Piece's sound is uniquely melodic and devilishly catchy. While their sound is definitely ensconced in the alternative pop/rock hierarchy, it is difficult to compare to any other band, having slight hints of U2, Pearl Jam, Sloan, and Our Lady Peace. From the blistering, fun, and infectious "Somebody Else" to the syncopated blues-funk of "Broken Lines" to the melodically haunting and evocative "Struggling to Fly", the band doesn't rest on its musical laurels at any time. The foursome creates sonically welded stories of love, loss, redemption, heartbreak, the force of nature, and video store clerks.
Though a relatively young band, the talented quartet has shared the stage with local Toronto talents including Round 2, the Jay Ewart Band, the Riddle, Welcome Karma, and the Beatles. Forming friendships and making music, this self-made group is looking ahead to recording and touring in the near future. Listen to the free demo at www.randompiece.com.
Random Piece is:
JAY DENICOLAIS - Rhythm Guitar & Lead Vocals
At age 22, Jay DeNicolais is a self-taught guitarist/singer/songwriter. Since his pairing with fellow songwriter/guitarist Marc Teghrarian for a high school benefit in 1998, Jay has been committed to developing his musical potential. Currently enjoying the freedom of indie music and a new band line-up, this aspiring musician is dead set on Random Piece's coming-of-age.
MARC TEGHRARIAN - Lead Guitar & Backup Vocals
Though he unwillingly endured guitar lessons as a young boy, in high school Marc Teghrarian returned to the instrument he once hated. By grade 13, Marc was united with Jay to form their first band, the Silver Tongued Devils. Today, the duo are still together although they have evolved greatly, having gone through a myriad of band names and band members as well as evolving musically. Marc is active in the musical field, pursuing interests in learning the art of digital audio recording and playing lead guitar in the pit band for the University of Toronto’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar. His musical influences are diverse and include artists from all generations (anything from Jimi Hendrix to U2 to The Strokes). He has also developed an appreciation of other, less mainstream types of music -- especially Blues and Jazz.
STEVE ROGERS - Bass Guitar & Backup Vocals
Playing bass guitar over the last seven years, Steve Rogers has built his technical playing style into a strong part of his repertoire. In addition to his work on the bass, he has also performed as a guitarist and independent songwriter. Since his move into the Toronto scene in mid-1998, Steve has been playing as a "gun for hire" with various Toronto-based performers including the Tom Glen 5.5 and Kevin Aichelle. Reunited once again with drummer Graydon James, he looks forward to getting Random Piece on the map as "one of the first music groups to effectively use a monkey during our stage show..."
GRAYDON JAMES - Drums & Backup Vocals
Playing, performing, and teaching percussion since the early '90s, Graydon James is an accomplished musician and, with the help of his fellow band members and his self-taught guitar skills, a budding songwriter. As a former member of K-W based quartet Relative Zero, Graydon shared the stage with Scratching Post, Ron Hawkins and The Rusty Nails, and local bands Explosion Girl, and the Matt Osborne Band. Now, based in Toronto, he is committed to "[making] Random Piece the grandest strumpet in all the land!"
